First-annual Charter Celebration weekend unites the generations

First-annual Charter Celebration weekend unites the generations

For the first time this year, alumni had two opportunities to return to campus for homecoming events. The schedule was reformatted to include Homecoming Weekend in the fall and Charter Celebration Weekend in the spring.

Many of the traditional homecoming activities, including the alumni dinner and awards, alumni chapel, and Circle of Songs, were moved to the spring event, which took place April 20-21. The new event also allowed alumni to participate in long-held traditions such as Midnight March and the ring and robing ceremonies.

Approximately 155 alumni and guests attended the weekend. The Class of 1962 received Golden Diplomas, and Dr. Marlene Mixon Zipperlen ’67 was presented with the Distinguished Alumni Award during alumni chapel.

Charter Celebration was a wonderful weekend with many reconnections,” Assistant Director of Alumni Relations Dani Beth Crosby said. “Watching current students join hands with alumni to sing the Circle of Songs, seeing alumni throw the ‘Crusader C’ with current students while singing the alma mater, and watching the graduating seniors giving candles to alumni to light during Midnight March was a beautiful picture of our UMHB family uniting across the generations.”
