Music major wins opportunity to perform live on public radio

University of Mary Hardin-Baylor vocal performance major, Kathleen Shelton, was selected out of 200 vocalists as the 2010 Blue Lake Staff Solo Competition Winner. As the winner, Shelton performed live with the Blue Lake Festival Orchestra August 21, on Blue Lake Public Radio.

Shelton and another UMHB music education major, Ashley Calderon, worked as counselors this summer at the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan. Blue Lake is the largest fine arts camp of its kind in the nation.

Shelton and Calderon were both selected to be a part of the Blue Lake Vocal Ensemble, which is the premier choral ensemble. Both ladies were also selected to perform in the Staff Showcase this summer.

Each summer Blue Lake invites all of their 200 member staff to compete in their Staff Solo Competition. This year the festival chose an oboist, cellist, soprano, and a mezzo-soprano. These chosen staffers performed their selections in front of over 1300 campers and public. The winner of the competition is given the opportunity to perform their solo with a full orchestra on the final night of camp. Three judges selected Shelton as the 2010 Blue Lake Staff Solo Competition Winner.

Shelton said she was thrilled to be selected as the Staff Solo Competition winner.

“I sang my solo with a full orchestra made up of very talented faculty and staff members from the camp,” she said. “I was able to work with a new conductor which was a great learning opportunity. Plus, I got to perform for over 1300 people, not including the radio. It was my biggest audience yet.”

Shelton is a vocal student of George Hogan, Assistant Professor & Opera Director. Calderon is a vocal student of Lisa Clement, Associate Professor of Music.
